I don’t work fast and I don’t promise an easy process. Most people don’t like the camera — or at least approach it with caution — and that’s completely normal. I also need time to sense a person and the atmosphere around them. Commonly a person freezes, falls silent, unsure of what to do next. I wait. I wait for the moment when they forget they’re being photographed. The first minutes are always awkward. Then something shifts, loosens, switches off — and that’s when the real photograph appears. That’s the shot!
